Patchwork: Launching the "Shift Happens" Newsletter Brand

Solution

Patchwork Health builds workforce technology for the NHS, helping trusts fill shifts, manage temporary staffing and give clinicians more control over how and when they work. Its audience is the people who keep the system running: doctors, nurses and the managers behind the rota. Reaching them is hard. They are time-poor, wary of anything that reads as marketing, and already saturated with content.

Patchwork wanted an owned channel to build brand and community with that audience on its own terms, without it landing as a sales pitch. The brief was to create an owned-media brand from scratch: something with a voice of its own that clinicians would read, share and want to contribute to.

Newsletter strategy and production

We created Shift Happens, a newsletter published on Substack with its own name, identity and editorial rhythm. Behind it sits a repeatable content system spanning news, jobs, events and clinician contributions, alongside a branded meme bank that gives the newsletter owned creative IP and a personality readers recognise.

Editorial and brand voice

We built a distinctive editorial voice for Shift Happens, warm and candid, that treats clinicians as insiders rather than an audience to be sold to. We plan and write each edition and coordinate a network of clinical contributors, so every issue carries perspectives readers already trust.

Content and multimedia

We repurpose podcast conversations with clinical guests into newsletter and social content, giving Shift Happens a steady supply of material and a presence beyond the inbox. Clips are cut for social and shared across Patchwork's own channels to keep the brand visible between editions.

Design and growth

We own the look and feel, from the brand identity through to creative assets, email signatures and banners. Audience growth is run deliberately, with cross-promotion to aligned clinical publishers and creators and a guerrilla marketing plan built around moments like NHS Confed.

Results

SomX delivered a distinct, tangible owned-media product with early traction:

  • A new owned-media brand, live: Shift Happens launched on Substack with its own identity and a full content system behind it, spanning newsletter, social and podcast-derived content.
  • Multiple editions shipped: successive volumes published, with each edition drawing strong feedback from Patchwork and its clinician readers.
  • A growing contributor network: respected clinical voices contributing to editions, with cross-promotion partners lined up for future issues.
  • Content built to travel: podcast clips and newsletter segments repurposed across Patchwork's owned channels and social.
  • Audience-building beyond the inbox: a guerrilla marketing plan around NHS Confed and outreach into the wider clinical-creator community.

Reflection

Shift Happens shows what SomX does when the brief is to build, not just amplify. Patchwork needed to reach NHS clinicians on their own terms, and a campaign would not have done it, so we stood up an owned-media brand from scratch, spanning strategy, editorial, design and growth. The hard part was credibility: clinicians spot a marketing channel instantly, so the voice, the contributors and the content all had to earn their place. Shift Happens now gives Patchwork a platform it owns outright and a direct line to the audience that matters most to its business. It is a capability distinct from the agency's PR and campaign work, and one of the clearest examples of it in the portfolio.
